Accredited Parental Courses for Parents

The Institute for Education is accepting applications submitted online for the below Accredited Modules commencing this scholastic year 2018-2019 at San Ġorġ Preca College, Secondary School, Ħamrun. The target audience is educators and parents who are interested in collaborating with schools. Schools are requested to inform parents about these modules and urge those who are interested to participate.

These courses at MQF level 5 are offered across a variety of areas within the educational sphere. The Institute firmly believes that parents play a critical role in providing learning opportunities at home and in linking what children learn at school with other experiences. By facilitating and participating in diverse learning experiences and activities outside the school, parents become an important factor in children’s overall learning and education.

The courses offer innovative learning experiences and include assessments. They are the perfect opportunity to gain or improve knowledge and skills as well as benefit from the expertise of our academic tutors.

Further information regarding entry requirements and course outlines can be viewed from the Application Link.

Family Coding Night

Family Code Night” is a series of 2-hour workshops in which children in year 4 and 5 and their parents do computer coding – together! In this special evening of learning and fun, you’ll play in parent-child teams to complete fun Lego Wedo robotics workshops and challenges at your own pace, and learn core concepts in coding. The workshops will be delivered by Lego Academy certified trainers.

Afterwards, you’ll go home with a special “Code On at Home” guide to continue coding puzzles, learning and fun at home. No coding experience is required, laptops & tablets will be available if needed (bring one device for each two attendees if you can). This is a great experience to share with your children!

The program is free, but space is limited. Availability is on a first come first served basis. Book your place today! You’ll be coding with your child in no time!

This activity is being organised by the Directorate for Digital Literacy & Transversal Skills which seeks to promote Computational Thinking in children and young people. These competencies enable them to think in a different way, to express themselves through a variety of media, to solve real-world problems and analyse everyday issues with a
different perspective.

Through this new initiative, parents and guardians discover ways in which they can support their child’s learning as children and adults engage in fun coding activities.

Solar Eclipse visible from Malta

Animation_solar_eclipse_of_March_20,_2015 A total solar eclipse will occur on Friday March 20, 2015. However, only a partial solar eclipse will be visible from Malta.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, thereby obscuring, partly or totally, the image of the Sun for someone who is situated on Earth and turning day into darkness.

WARNING: Never view the sun with the naked eye or with any optical device, such as binoculars or a telescope!

How to view a solar eclipse in a safe way

TSE2015Mar20T-animated-gifhe only populated places where the 20th March total eclipse can be can seen, are the Faroe Islands and Svalbard. Seen from Malta, the moon will block only 38% of the sun. The start of the partial eclipse will be at 09:21, with the maximum eclipse occurring at 10:25 am. The end of the partial eclipse is at 11:33am.

This is the last total solar eclipse visible in Europe until the eclipse of August 12, 2026.

At the end of its path, the shadow of the Moon rises from the Earth’s surface to space at the north pole.

Solar-Eclipse-seen-from-Gharghur-Malta

How to view a solar eclipse in a safe way!

The only way to view the partially eclipsed Sun safely is to project or filter the Sun’s rays. Some safe options:

Pinhole projector: An easy and cheap way to view the Sun is to project its image to a screen, such as a sheet of white paper or cardboard. Projection works well with or without a telescope or binoculars. However, don’t look through the telescope’s eyepiece or side-mounted finder scope while projecting the Sun’s image to a screen. Read this article to learn how to make a DIY pinhole projector

Eclipse glasses: Check with a local astronomy club for where to rent or buy eclipse glasses.

Welder’s goggles: These can be found at your local welding supply store. NASA recommends welder’s googles rated 14 or higher.

Aluminised Mylar sheeting: Aluminised Mylar sheets can be easily cut with scissors and can be used to see a partial eclipse of the sun.
