Designing the exterior area of a hotel (perimeter)
To help students better understand how to measure and calculate perimeters of rectangles and regular polygons, we opted for a project-based approach and designed a model of the exterior area of a hotel. Every student was assigned a particular design such as a hexagonal shaped umbrella with sides 2.4cm each, an equilateral triangle table with sides 5.4cm and a square shaped jacuzzi with sides 4.5cm (as well as a pool, a bar, a fun pool and deck chairs). Students had to prepare their design according to the agreed colour schemes and also calculate its perimeter. Everything was put together and we discussed a suitable title for our hotel.
