Following the success registered the last three years, the Borża ta’ San Martin will also include a fair-trade concept.
Being sold at €4, each bag will contain the traditional sweet bun (ħbejża ta’ San Martin), a few walnuts and hazelnuts, a tangerine or clementine and an organic & fair-trade date and walnut bar. The bag will also include information about fairtrade.
Traditionally, the Borża ta’ San Martin – a simple colourful cloth bag pulled with a string on top – was placed near the children bedside, full of hard shelled almonds, walnuts, chestnuts, figs, apples, oranges, tangerines, pomegranates, and the traditional San Martin bun hard glazed on top and with a liquored sweet stuck in the middle of the bun. No wonder the children would happily chant the rhyme “ġewż, lewż, qastan, tin, kemm inħobbu l-San Martin”!
